This is a highly transformative project focused on creating a new multifunctional and multipurpose public space for Soraluze. A space committed to its context, but rather than replicating it as is, it is capable of reorganizing it by restructuring the visual, spatial, and material hierarchy of the space. The reconstruction of the old thermic treatments building remains pending. Despite the strenuous efforts made by the project team to demonstrate not only the technical feasibility of its preservation but also its economic and social rationale of doing so, it has had to be partially demolished to make room for the machinery necessary for the replacement of the Gabolats Bridge. This bridge replacement project, which will be undertaken immediately by the Basque Water Agency (URA), has led to the development of a plan that allows for the complete project outlined in the basic project to be implemented in two phases: one prior to the planned bridge replacement work and a subsequent phase to be executed after completion.

[/vc_column_text][vc_separator type=”transparent” thickness=”25″][vc_single_image image=”18217″ img_size=”full” css=”” qode_css_animation=””][vc_separator type=”transparent” thickness=”3″][vc_single_image image=”18355″ img_size=”full” css=”” qode_css_animation=””][vc_separator type=”transparent” thickness=”3″][vc_single_image image=”18220″ img_size=”full” css=”” qode_css_animation=””][vc_separator type=”transparent” thickness=”3″][vc_single_image image=”18280″ img_size=”full” css=”” qode_css_animation=””][vc_separator type=”transparent” thickness=”3″][vc_column_text css=””]

The tradition of the Soraluze arms industry dates back to the 16th century, when the Royal Arms Factory of Placencia was established, and it was carrieed out within the site of the intervention, in various forms, first as guild workshops and later in modern industrial factories until the closure of the SAPA Factory in 2005. It was at the beginning of the 20th century that the interesting factory complex was built, occupying the narrow site between the Deba river and the town’s main road. This construction was greatly influenced by the lack of space in the town center, aligned longitudinally with the riverbed. Its imposing presence in the municipality is noticeable from virtually any location. The factory facilities are arranged in five individual buildings, along the meander of the river, each typologically adapted to its intended use within the production chain: warehouses for the production of cannons, office buildings, workshops, and a paint and thermal treatment plant. The single-story, open-plan bays were the place where the cannons were assembled and adjusted. They were built with a steel structure with riveted pillars and lattice beams, as well as the Pratt-type trusses.

[/vc_column_text][vc_separator type=”transparent” thickness=”25″][vc_single_image image=”18211″ img_size=”full” css=”” qode_css_animation=””][vc_separator type=”transparent” thickness=”25″][vc_single_image image=”18208″ img_size=”full” css=”” qode_css_animation=””][vc_separator type=”transparent” thickness=”3″][vc_column_text css=””]

They have a gabled roof, with the ridge parallel to the longer façade and therefore to the Deba river. Access was originally provided from the shorter façades through semicircular arched doorways. These were later replaced by new lintelled entrances from the adjoining buildings when new constructions were added to the gables. The abundant lighting was partly zenithal, but it was mainly achieved through a line of openings arranged regularly on both longitudinal façades. Its completely open-plan interior, with a large, uncompartmented, usable surface, was initially populated by production debris and industrial machinery, overgrown by vegetation, in an initial state of ruin, which nevertheless remained highly evocative and beautiful. This circumstance, which takes on great importance in the new proposal, is attempted to be transferred to the transformation project of the warehouse into a multifunctional public space, with the recovery of various existing elements, always trying to evoke the romantic image of the ruin and appeal to the memory of the inhabitants of Soraluze.

[/vc_column_text][vc_separator type=”transparent” thickness=”3″][vc_single_image image=”18214″ img_size=”full” css=”” qode_css_animation=””][vc_separator type=”transparent” thickness=”3″][vc_single_image image=”18579″ img_size=”full” css=”” qode_css_animation=””][vc_separator type=”transparent” thickness=”3″][vc_single_image image=”18292″ img_size=”full” css=”” qode_css_animation=””][vc_separator type=”transparent” thickness=”25″][vc_column_text css=””]

Of the buildings described above, the intervention is limited to the buildings that stand on the plot planned for public space at the eastern end. Accordeing to the regulations both were non complaying buildings due to their complicated location within the urban fabric, but both possess great historical and social value as symbolic and material representations of Soraluze’s identity as an industrial town. Based on this, and to ensure that this important heritage remains intact, the proposal focuses not only on the restoration of the structure of both buildings, redesigning them to accommodate the new public uses of the space, but also on their transformation and consolidation of their memory through the reproduction of their volume, reconstructed in the form of a translucent and transparent polycarbonate skin, which dematerializes them and lightens their presence, but does not relegate them to disappearance or oblivion. Following this premise, the large longitudinal bay is restored as a large, multipurpose covered public space that allows for multiple uses depending on the needs of its future users. Whether as a open-plan space, like a large covered plaza or a viewing platform overlooking the river; or as a multifunctional hall, suitable for concerts or festivals, for a fair or a market; or even as a closed venue for events requiring sectorization or access control. To achieve this, its covering is not limited to just the roof, which would be counterproductive, since, due to the height of the existing building, it would not be able to offer sufficient protection from inclement weather on windy days. Instead, it extends like a new translucent skin across its facades up to the height of a first floor, reproducing the original facade of the existing building, even down to its openings and moldings, but in the form of a skin with varying degrees of transparency. This double skin, which replicates the materiality of the walls, will allow a second phase to accommodate a system of translucent polycarbonate lifting enclosures operated by a sash mechanism, allowing for the plaza’s permeability to be adjusted. The doors on both side walls are left in their original state. This contributes to a smooth transition between the different spaces of the project by creating a scenography in the circulation areas that harks back to the use of the existing pavilions, reproducing their powerful central axis.

[/vc_column_text][vc_separator type=”transparent” thickness=”25″][vc_single_image image=”18253″ img_size=”full” css=”” qode_css_animation=””][vc_separator type=”transparent” thickness=”25″][vc_single_image image=”18256″ img_size=”full” css=”” qode_css_animation=””][vc_separator type=”transparent” thickness=”25″][vc_single_image image=”18582″ img_size=”full” css=”” qode_css_animation=””][vc_separator type=”transparent” thickness=”25″][vc_single_image image=”18585″ img_size=”full” css=”” qode_css_animation=””][vc_separator type=”transparent” thickness=”25″][vc_single_image image=”18262″ img_size=”full” css=”” qode_css_animation=””][vc_separator type=”transparent” thickness=”25″][vc_column_text css=””]The structure of the building is restored in all its beauty and complexity and painted in a Green colour reminiscent of the factory’s machinery, while the new additions and substructures supporting the new skin are painted in greyish blue. The heat treatment, painting, and bathing building, partially demolished in this first phase because it was necessary for the construction of the new bridge, is temporarily transformed into a romantic ruin, built simply and economically with the tools and strategies learned from tactical urbanism.[/vc_column_text][vc_separator type=”transparent” thickness=”25″][vc_single_image image=”18307″ img_size=”full” css=”” qode_css_animation=””][vc_separator type=”transparent” thickness=”25″][vc_single_image image=”18588″ img_size=”full” css=”” qode_css_animation=””][vc_separator type=”transparent” thickness=”25″][vc_single_image image=”18223″ img_size=”full” css=”” qode_css_animation=””][vc_separator type=”transparent” thickness=”25″][vc_column_text css=””]During a transitional phase, it will function as a public space and a space for pedestrian access to the Gabolats bridge. In a second phase, it will be restored to create a covered transition space between the main nave and the bridge. The reuse of its structural skeleton, reproduced in a mixed structure of concrete, steel, and wood, and the regeneration of its volume through new translucent skins that reproduce its facades from the first floor upwards, will enable the creation of an open, permeable space on the ground floor, safe and accessible for pedestrian use. The structure will create a protective barrier against vehicle traffic circulating on the route currently shared with pedestrians. The intervention will thus solve the problem that the building created at the bridge landing on the west bank of the river, as vehicle and pedestrian traffic had to coexist at the neck of the funnel created between the existing buildings. This will not only prevent the building from being completely eliminated, but will also transform it and take advantage of its location and configuration to create a quality urban space. This space is also expected to concentrate communications between the different heights of the adjacents streets and the covered public space itself, providing access to the viewing platforms, pulpits, and improvised stages that are proposed as a complement to the space and as an alternative to improve accessibility. A spiral staircase will provide access to a footbridge connecting the space with the upper level of Baltegieta Street and will also create a viewing platform overlooking the river and a pulpit extendable to the covered public space. It will be a space with great potential for introducing complementary uses and facilities (elevators, services, restrooms or temporary dressing rooms linked to performances, etc.) that may be required in the future, becoming an open but adaptable and unique public space, capable of moving from being part of the covered public space of the main bay to becoming a serving space for the stage in events and festivals.[/vc_column_text][vc_separator type=”transparent” thickness=”25″][vc_single_image image=”18226″ img_size=”full” css=”” qode_css_animation=””][vc_separator type=”transparent” thickness=”25″][vc_single_image image=”18591″ img_size=”full” css=”” qode_css_animation=””][vc_separator type=”transparent” thickness=”25″][vc_single_image image=”18594″ img_size=”full” css=”” qode_css_animation=””][vc_separator type=”transparent” thickness=”25″][vc_column_text css=””]Various subtle gestures aim to keep the memory of the pre-existing structures alive, preserving their character and even appealing to the beauty of their ruins. The end walls of the longitudinal bay with their central openings have been maintained, and the original arcades have also been restored. Three bays of the pavilion’s original wall, facing the river, serve to evoke the memory of the industrial ruin by displaying some of the recovered machinery protected behind them, such as the cannon machine. They also facilitate the transition between the new public space and the pre-existing structures of the complex, which will be preserved for residential use From these bays, access to the river is provided by lightweight steel stairs.. The two overhead cranes, especially the one manufactured in Glasgow at the beginning of the 20th century, have been preserved for their value and beauty. The blue plinth that borders all the interior walls is reproduced in the recovered areas and reinvented in the form of the quadrangular mesh railings of the intervention, painted in the same color, and as a blue glaze on the lower part of the sash enclosure panels, which were to be implemented in the second phase. All elements that evoke the memory of the site have been retained to the extent possible. Even the trusses of the heat treatment facility, which were to be stored until reconstruction, have been temporarily reused on the urban beach of the Deba River, replacing the metal structures planned in the project to create a vegetated wall.[/vc_column_text][vc_separator type=”transparent” thickness=”25″][vc_single_image image=”18597″ img_size=”full” css=”” qode_css_animation=””][vc_separator type=”transparent” thickness=”25″][vc_single_image image=”18600″ img_size=”full” css=”” qode_css_animation=””][vc_separator type=”transparent” thickness=”25″][vc_single_image image=”18232″ img_size=”full” css=”” qode_css_animation=””][vc_separator type=”transparent” thickness=”25″][vc_single_image image=”18603″ img_size=”full” css=”” qode_css_animation=””][vc_separator type=”transparent” thickness=”25″][vc_single_image image=”18238″ img_size=”full” css=”” qode_css_animation=””][vc_separator type=”transparent” thickness=”25″][vc_single_image image=”18606″ img_size=”full” css=”” qode_css_animation=””][vc_separator type=”transparent” thickness=”25″][vc_single_image image=”18609″ img_size=”full” css=”” qode_css_animation=””][vc_separator type=”transparent” thickness=”25″][vc_column_text css=””]Finally, in the transition zone between the large longitudinal bay that forms the covered public space and the office building, a small and welcoming courtyard is created. This intimate courtyard serves as a transition between the two buildings and creates a friendly, vegetated area that once again connects the space with the river. Wooden steps are used in the upper section and concrete steps in the areas closest to the river, providing access to a new urban beach. This recreational area is populated by vegetation and climbing plants, growing on a metal lattice structure that also serves to protect users from the dilapidated state of the factory complex buildings until they can be renovated.[/vc_column_text][vc_separator type=”transparent” thickness=”25″][vc_single_image image=”18612″ img_size=”full” css=”” qode_css_animation=””][vc_separator type=”transparent” thickness=”25″][vc_single_image image=”18615″ img_size=”full” css=”” qode_css_animation=””][vc_separator type=”transparent” thickness=”25″][vc_single_image image=”18298″ img_size=”full” css=”” qode_css_animation=””][vc_separator type=”transparent” thickness=”25″][vc_column_text css=””]Although the project to transform the former arms factory SAPA into a space for people and life could not be fully completed in this initial phase, it demonstrates the relevance of reusing our built heritage, considering everything that exists as an asset, a real value. Despite the difficulties and the hard work involved in its transformation, especially to convince all the agents involved in the management of our urban environment, it is necessary to consider all the existing situations as heritage, and reuse them, reveal them, enrich them, transform them, repair them and protect them in certain cases. This approach to heritage through what exists touches on the fundamental idea of heritage as a lived space. Its repair, its transformation and the possibility of its metamorphosis therefore occur with respect to this lived condition. In addition to economic and ecological issues, the social issue is decisive.[/vc_column_text][vc_separator type=”transparent” thickness=”25″][vc_single_image
